WHAT MAKES PEOPLE VOTE REPUBLICAN?
By Jonathan Haidt
“What makes people vote Republican? Why in particular do working class and rural Americans usually vote for pro-business Republicans when their economic interests would seem better served by Democratic policies? We psychologists have been examining the origins of ideology ever since Hitler sent us Germany’s best psychologists, and we long ago reported that strict parenting and a variety of personal insecurities work together to turn people against liberalism, diversity, and progress. But now that we can map the brains, genes, and unconscious attitudes of conservatives, we have refined our diagnosis: conservatism is a partially heritable personality trait that predisposes some people to be cognitively inflexible, fond of hierarchy, and inordinately afraid of uncertainty, change, and death. People vote Republican because Republicans offer “moral clarity”—a simple vision of good and evil that activates deep seated fears in much of the electorate. Democrats, in contrast, appeal to reason with their long-winded explorations of policy options for a complex world.”
Thinking is so overated. I would feel much more comfortable if they acted and spoke to me as if I were a two-year-old.

Completely agree (as usual. Meeee! I want to disagree sometimes with you!)
As Mestre says that Holderlin said ( ja, ja), “where danger is, salvation also grows”. I mean, it seems Democrats are not afraid to change the status quo looking for something better (though it could be riskier than not doing anything). The problem is… how many old people (full of fears) can vote in your country? When was the last baby boom?
In my highschool, teacher told us that in 1977 there was a big power cut in NY that caused a baby boom 9 months later. It made me laugh a lot (we people are so simple!) What I want to say is… if we could find a way to cause some other power cuts, like 5 or 6 a year, may be in 20 years Democrats could have a chance!

Muuaaaaa,
Vanesa
I’m with you man. Thinking sucks. Will someone just feed me some moral clarity already!
I don´t know about the rest of the states, but I know what moves a huge part of Florida votes (which were enough, eight years ago, to knock Al Gore out): probably not a lot of people have heard about “el niño Elian” or “Eliansito” as they call him. Well, the little boy arrived in a boat to the Miami coast. His mother and other family members died in the trip. Clinton sent him back to Fidel, where he used him as a political victory “over the americans”. Cuban exile still remembers him… Almost everyday! If I ask my grandmother (Florida voter) who would she like to win the elections, she will think about one single thing: los demócratas devolvieron al niño balsero. A big part of the Florida community (exiles, and children and grandchildren of the exiles) are looking just to one place in the world and that´s not the US: it´s Cuba. And their spanish TVs, radios and newspapers are doing it too… I suppose Obama´s force towards change convinced them. It would be great if this change does not stay inside US frontiers and also applies to neighbouring countries, cause it´s about time.
Something still puzzles me: The things that are beign critizised about Bush nowadays, weren´t also obvious four years ago? I know there’s a huge tendency for re-election but… Come on… He was already awful by then.
By the way, Vanesa, when do you come to Miami with me?
One of the most important facts in Obama’s campaign (and nobody is talking about it!):
